Lankayan Island
A jewel like tiny island in
Sulu Sea, an hour and a half boat ride
north of Sandakan, Lankayan has been declared part of an immense Marine
Protected Area to adopt the eco-tourism concept. Unpopulated and
covered by thick tropical island vegetation on its topside, this
peaceful, untouched little bit of paradise, which is encircled by pure
white sandy beach, is an ideal destination for those who search for
tranquility and relaxation in a natural setting.
For
divers, Lankayan Island is also fast becoming one of the hottest diving
site on the map today. There are many dive sites around, all within 2 -
15 minutes away from the island. Most are submerged reefs starting at
approximately 7 - 11m sloping 24m to the sandy sea bottom floor. And
the area boasts a few good wreck dives, with a number of wrecks found
around the coastline.
Situated
within the Sea Turtle Corridor, Lankayan Island is also a nesting place
for Green and Hawksbill Turtles. Rangers patrol the beaches at night
and protect any laying turtles from human disturbance. When
eggs
are laid, the eggs are removed and brought to the hatchery for
incubation. Guests can register to be woken up to see turtles nesting
as well as to release new hatchlings to the sea should there be such an
occasion.

Pangkor Island
In stark contrast
to Malaysia's fast-paced progress, Pangkor remains a haven for those
seeking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Soak up
the sun on her golden beaches. Catch sight of fishing boats. For
centuries, Pangkor has been a welcome stopover for weary sea
travellers, pirates and adventurers. At one time even ruled by European
conquerors. Yet, as if oblivious to the ravages of war and conquest,
her natural wonders have remained unscarred. Perhaps to conquer your
heart.

The main island of Pangkor is
mainly populated by fisherfolk who occupy the eastern coastline. The
island is famous for its 'ikan bilis' (anchovies) and squids. The real
attraction here however are the enchanting beaches on the western
coastline which are marvellous for swimming or just basking in the sun,
in complete privacy admist tranqull surroundings.
Pangkor today is a thriving
tourist destination
that somehow does not reflect her turbulent past. Visitors will be
charmed by the serenity of her fishing villages, her small but bustling
towns and her splendid selection of world-class holiday resorts.
